Boats may disappear after getting out

I was following a buried treasure map when I got out to dig for the chest, but when I pressed shift my boat disappeared behind me. I don't know if it was related to the fact that I was holding the map itself or anything, and before you ask, yes I did check for magma or anything that could destroy a boat.
