Problems with the ink sac

I cannot craft a book & quill or black dye even though I have all of the required ingredients. The ink sac is highlighted red in the recipe book for both, and when I put the items into the crafting bench manually the output remains empty as if the ink sac was missing. I can however, craft items like black carpet or black shulker boxes using the same ink sacs.
