Caves are hard to find in caves in cliffs

In the caves and cliffs feature, the caves on the surface are not exposed. I would always have to dig down and find a cave myself instead of just entering one from above. Sometimes I would feel scared to just dig down because I have a risk of falling into lava. Please fix this.
