Can't play multiplayer with versiones below mine

My friends have got version 0.13.1, and when I try to play with them in a server, Minecraft says there is no connection available or it just keeps loading for ever.
Playing with my friends was the main reason why I paid €6,99.
If not resolved, I would like to get my money paid back.
