I can’t make wood planks out of any type of wood logs

I started a brand new world and attempted to make wood planks out of some oak logs I got. I put the logs in one of the four squares of my inventory screen but the oak planks didn’t show up. I tried with birch wood and still couldn’t make wood planks. I had to cheat and go into creative mode just to get planks and make a crafting table. I tried again to make oak or birch planks on the crafting table but still couldn’t make them. What’s going on, should I uninstall the game and try reinstalling it? Is it a glitch?
