Dying when jumping through the end portal to the overworld

When I was jumping through the end portal, to the overworld, I died from fall damage when I got back to the overworld. I lost all my stuff, including the dragon egg, which i can never get back. There's no way I can die from fall damage with almost full netherite armor, plus i didn't jump through the portal at a tall height.
