villagers not losing jobs

In the experiments for 1.18 I found a village and would make several librarians. I would make sure they are working on their designated job and destroy the lectern hoping for them have mending. After maybe one or two tries they would still have the job and I could not change it and get mending it doesn't just happen for librarians it has happened for other villager job.
