Killed when jumping through the end portal

I have been killed several times in two different Minecraft worlds while jumping through the end portal back to the overworld . Every time I've been killed, the message "______ fell from a high place" comes up in the chat. I have also lost all of my items each of those times that I've died, and have not been able to recover them.
