Random deaths

I'm pillaring up in the Nether about 30 blocks above a lava lake. Normal stuff. All of the sudden, snap, I'm dead. I didn't fall, didn't get attacked, I just randomly died on top of my pillar. PLEASE MOJANG, FIX THIS!
