Ender Pearl Phased me through a wall and the ground

So I was in the nether being attacked by ghasts. So I threw a ender Pearl at a wall to try to hide . I was at y 70 when I threw the Pearl at the wall and four seconds later I am at y 22 in a lava pool and I died in the end. But it just makes no sense how a ender Pearl phased through multiple y levels in four seconds.
