Souls speed boots cannot be removed

I have on soul speed boots.  When I try to take them off, they immediately re-appear on my feet.  I can't equip any other boots from my hotbar.  It happens in full screen and split screen.  It happens in the nether and in the overworld.  I have to log out and log back in again in order to change my boots.
