Villagers disappear when going through nether portal in boat

I was moving villagers through the nether. When they made it through, I put a boat near the portal to get the villagers in it. When the villagers went in, I accidentally nudged the boat into the portal. I went in to the other side, expecting the villagers to be there but it was just the boat there.
