My friend and I died when coming through the end portal by "falling from a high place"

On the way back to the overworld from the End Dimension, my friend and I randomly died to "falling from a high place" when we walked normally into the exit portal of the End Dimension. We know for a fact that this is a bug, as this should not be happening at all.
