End portal killing me when I go back to the over world

Me and my friend defeated the ender dragon and we jumped through the portal to go home and then went back to the end and went to the end cities and went to go back home and we jumped though and it killed us losing all of our levels and loot. I am assuming this is a bug. It has never happened to me before
