Died after getting into the end portal that gets you to the overworld

So this happened to my friend twice, we have a world in which we play online. He died after getting into the end portal that gets you to the overworld (we killed the dragon long ago), the worst part is that he lost all his items and they aren't at any spawn chunk or anything.
