Water block sounds like stone being broken when sponge block or wither is placed in it

In creative mode, placing a wither in a water block will cause water blocks to disappear and sound like stone breaking. Same thing happens when placing a sponge block in water, but the sound continues as long as the sponge is absorbing water.
