All villagers disappeared / despawned

My son has just had 44 villagers (the whole village population) disappear/despawn, walled village wih no escape possibility and 3 iron golems.  Was in peaceful mode (daytime) at the time as he was building something.  He says they would have all been across 2 chunks.
