Horses in love mode don't breed

I fed 2 horses a golden carrot each, they both enter love mode but literally nothing happens after. My friend tamed one horse and I tamed the other, could that be why? He also named them both "M'lady". I haven't reached a breeding/mob cap since this is the first time I've tried to breed in the world I'm in and there are barely and mobs around.
