Nether portals don't link naturally to a new location in the overworld

Placing a new portal in the nether only brings me to my original entry point into the nether and doesn't allow me to exit the nether in a new location. If you have more than one set of portals in the world you'll exit the nether at the location of the original portal no matter what portal you exit through. Causes a massive headache for try to use the nether to explore new lands.
