Sometimes get nothing when fishing if land on dropped item.

I fish regularly to get enchanting books and xp. When I cast my rod on a floating item in the water, the aftermath of me reeling in my rod ends in the result of nothing. However, occasionally I will get a fish or other item from fishing.
