Swimming and drowning on land in multiplayer worlds

When swimming in my friends world sometimes I cant leave the water and if i eventually do, it still shows air bubbles in the corner of the screen. You are also stuck crawling and cant jump up blocks. I've only seen this when joining other worlds.
