Animals Randomly Despawn

After trapping several animals and then putting some fencing around them, I left the area and walked at least a few chunks away. I came back to the first area with the animals expecting the animals to still be within their fenced areas. All the animals I captured & fenced in disappeared even though they were within fenced areas less than the maximum area size.
