Animals either despawn or escape from fenced area

I had 3 cows, 2 pigs, 2 sheep, and 2 chickens in a fairly small fenced area. After a mining trip of around ~2 days, and upon returning to the fenced area, I only had 3 cows, 1 pig, 1 chicken, and no sheep.
