Wood blocks (not logs) don't peel bark even though button prompt is there

Have tried this with dark oak and jungle wood so far. Having crafted a wood block from logs I go to peel the bark from it but nothing happens. The button prompt to peel bark is visible on screen which suggests there shouldn't be a problem.
