Way too many phantoms spawning

I'm just playing Minecraft normally at night and all of the sudden a swarm of phantoms attack me and try to kill me.  It is extremely annoying and makes the game almost unplayable.  Please remove phantoms from the game or at least nerf them so there are like a few at a time and not a gang of 10-20 phantoms.  Thanks
