nether portal teleported me to a completely different place

I made a portal and when I went through it the portal was invisible. then I stood still and got teleported 89,000 blocks away from where I originally made the portal. I was playing with a friend, and when they went through the portal they were at the right place. had to dig to each other for 20,000 blocks.
