Broken blocks stay untouched (lag being destroyed) after breaking

Sometimes whenever I break blocks in creative and sometimes in survival, they stay on screen for a second longer than they're supposed to, and then break like regular blocks. It is really throwing me off because it seems they're still there and I try to break them again, but breaking the the block next to or under it.
Update: It happens when I place blocks too. I was just testing to make sure what I described was right and it did it.
