Suddenly unable to connect to friends world

Until yesterday I was able to join my brother's world, now I get the error code "crossbow" and am unable to join his world. I own a hard copy of MineCraft and have tried updating the game, disconnecting and reconnecting the WiFi, and pretty much everything else suggested by the Forums. Please help.
