wierd fall damage bug?

i was being atacked by magma cubes so i started bridging up to avoid them then i misplaced a block and fell

i gained extra golden hearts which was wierd because 

1. i did not have any totem on hand
2. it was a plain survival realm with my friends
3. i should have died
