Can't Join Game

I cannot join my friends Minecraft world whenever I try to it says locating server and stays on that screen when I try to select cancel it doesn't let me and keeps me in that screen it's not frozen though it just stays there saying locating server please help he has not whitelisted me or banned me so it's something with the game so please help
