No surface caves spawning in latest update

I haven't found any surface caves in the new update.  I have been attempting my own earth day challenge where I don't break most surface blocks and I really need some caves!  I've tried multiple seeds and traveled for multiple in game days in each without finding a single surface access cave.  Plenty of lakes, but no dry caves.  (I have accessed a cave under a lake).  Surface caves are an important part of early game user experience.  Please get them spawning with some frequency again
