Lightning striking through multiple blocks

Lightning is striking through multiple blocks above underground and killing the animals in my farm. One of my farms is literally 5 entire blocks underground and was still struck by lighting killing everything inside. I do not think this is intended and it is a real annoyance for me and I'm sure for others who are experiencing this problem.
