Mules Despawn

Every time I try to dreed a donkey and a horse I would immediately nametagged the mule so that it doesn't despawn. But no matter what I do, after one or more Minecraft days it would despawn for no reason. Even if I tie it up on a fence post with a lead, fenced it,  surrounded it with other neutral/passive mobs, or had lighting near/close to it.
