I am not able to mine minerals

I am new to the game. For several days, I have not been able to mine minerals. When I dig coal and iron, the blocks work like normal and disappear. But the resources do not appear for me to grab. They do not appear in my inventory also. 

I have tried several different worlds. I have also tried several different settings, such as peaceful, easy and normal. It is the same in all settings.
