AMD Ryzen 5 - Severe resource usage in recent Minecraft versions
Unfortunately I no longer own the affected laptop, and therefore cannot test if it is still happening to it. I sold the affected laptop in April 2024 as it was no longer sufficient enough for my needs, and am now using a self-built desktop computer that doesn't have this issue. If anyone else with another computer is having a similar issue to the one my old laptop had, please comment so I know.
Original report below
Recent versions of Minecraft seem to be very resource intensive on modern hardware, to the point where it's like running it on a very old computer. CPU, GPU, and RAM usage is 90-100% when in a world (even a flat world with no mobs in it), and there is roughly 2-5FPS (according to Xbox Game Bar). I've even had to force shut off my laptop by holding the power button down for a few seconds. The laptop I am using is an Acer Nitro 5 with the following specs:
- AMD Ryzen 5 4600H CPU (6 core 3GHz)
- Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 (so no RTX compatibility)
- 256GB M.2 SSD
- 15.6" 1920x1080p display built-in
- Happens with Windows 10 versions 2004, 20H2, and 21H1, and Windows 11 versions 21H2 and 22H2
- It is possible to reduce the severe usage by updating drivers
Please let me know if it's hardware related or a duplicate, as while I found other issues close to this, they were about high resource usage for a specific component (e.g. only high CPU use, or only high RAM use).
