Coal not smelting properly

When attempting to smelt 8 oak logs, I needed at least 3 pieces of coal to turn one oak log into charcoal - when I should have only needed one piece of coal to produce 8 charcoal.

It was like I was trying to use sticks or bamboo rather than coal.
