Everything I do will not save when I exit and come back in survival and in creative. Blocks that I put in my inventory and chest will stay though

When I change anything to the world it will not save. So when I exit and leave it dissapers. Although items will stay in my inventory and chest. I finished cutting out a room and I exited and came back and that I had done was gone.
