suffocate in roof because of an elytra!

So me and my friends got elytras on our realm a few months ago and ever since we experience a glitch. when using an elytra about 80% of the time you glitch into a roof like it's an air block and it keeps happening if you take the elytra off. you can walk into a one block space and you can't see anything so you start to suffocate and die. when you jump in a two block tall space you go into the roof.
