Adding player 2 for split screen play does not work

When attempting to add player 2 for split screen play, the game will sometimes crash. Every time player 2 is entering the game, they are removed from the game before actually entering the Minecraft world, so split screen play has become impossible. Uninstalling, then reinstalling Minecraft seems to have stopped the crash from happening; however, player 2 still cannot join.
