Bee not going to nearest hive

I built a beehive and went to a nearby nest, grabbed a bee on a lead and brought it back to the hive. I attached the lead to a fence post next to the hive and the bee just hovered around. Night came and went and it was still hovering. Out of curiosity, I released it from the lead and then followed it, it went back to it's original nest.
