Crafting birch blocks with no birch wood in inventory

Whenever I go to craft something, either on the crafting table or just from the inventory, I get the choice of being able to make birch blocks and I am not carrying any birch wood. The crafting choice always shows this as 99+ blocks available to craft. I have not seen this for other wood varieties.
