Random loud high pitched noise during play

Randomly when playing a very loud, seemingly max possible headphone volume, and high pitched sound will play.

The sound does not resemble any in game audio it is simply static and painful.

There doesn't seem to be a specific trigger for the noise, sometimes it will not play even after hours of play other times it will play every few minutes.

System uses a sound blasterx ae 5 soundcard, not onboard audio.
