Large Chests are splitting into smaller ones and crashing the game

I have a Nook HD with software 2.2.1

I have many large chests in my main base. 2 of them have split into their smaller chests. When I open and close them, everything is fine. When I try to add something to the smaller chests, the game crashes. I have tried destroying the chests and placing them again. This joins them together but when I left the game and came back, the chests were again separate and glitched.
