minecraft for switch not displaying login code

when i select the option to "sign in with a Microsoft account" it opens a popup box labeled 'Microsoft account' with the text 'Connecting...' inside, after a few moments it disappears, it never shows or loads the 8 digit code I'm supposed to use to connect my accounts.
