Dark Oak branches never grow in the negative x direction

When growing dark oak trees, the two blocks directly to the negative x direction never generate branches. This doesn’t seem to be affected by which sapling is bonemealed. I’ve only observed this using bonemeal, it might also be in world generation or growing through random tick.
