Broken fireworks

When I try to craft a firework, I add the colors and whatnot, and it lets me create the firework star. But, when I try to turn the firework star into an actually firework by adding gunpowder and paper, it just creates a firework with a small black explosion, no matter what colors I have actually put in the firework.
