Cannot craft torches on 2x2, and on crafting table they appear in hotbar but not in inventory.

When I craft torches on the 2x2 or 3x3, my ingredients are taken away but I get no torches. Sometimes, it shows a massive amount of torches in the hotbar (the ones I have attempted to craft), which disappear from the inventory when I switch them for another item. All of the other times, I see nothing, except for my stuff disappearing.
