Can't play with friends or on server

For some reason, whenever I try to play on servers or with friends, even when they are next to me, it doesn't work. I have tried to work out the source of the issue but I am not sure. I even made a new account to see if that would help but of course the same thing happened again. Usually it says "outdated server" but I am not sure what it means by that.
