Placing a sign on a wall behind a non-full block block destroys the block

When attempting to place a sign on the side of a block behind a non-full block (such as a chest), it breaks the non-full block. I have tried all the types of signs, and all of them exhibit the behavior. No other blocks that attach to the side of blocks that I have tested showed this behavior.
