Pumpkin growth rate limited by blocks surrounding stem

The growth of pumpkins seems to be affected by blocks surrounding the stem.  The more blocks surrounding it the slower it grows.

 

In the attached picture the pumpkin stems on the left produce far less pumpkins per hour than the ones on the right.
